What to Do in Pittsburgh in the Summer

Post by

Pittsburgh in the summer is one of the best times to be in the city. Warm weather, great food, music, and much more are around the corner for everyone lucky enough to be here now.

We take pride in our city and know all of the great things it has to offer. Here you’ll find awesome events going on throughout the summer and hopefully get excited for everything Pittsburgh has in store.

OpenStreetsPGH

One thing almost everyone remembers is learning how to right a bike during their childhood summers. Being able to ride in the warm sun and feel the wind racing by you. Relive those memories from a different perspective at OpenStreetsPGH this summer!

Hosted by BikeFest, the event closes down streets for traffic in Downtown, Lawrenceville, and the Strip District. This allows the community to bike, walk, rollerblade, or pretty much anything except driving throughout the areas.

This temporary closing gives people the chance to explore the city through popular streets and promotes healthy outdoor activities.

In addition to biking, at OpenStreetsPGH you will be able to find fitness classes, kid activities, shopping and more! Over 100 local businesses and organizations will also be present at the community event.

The next date for the event is June 30th so make sure to get your tires pumped up with some air before then! You can find more information about the event here.

PicklesBURGH

Perhaps the most unique festival the city of Pittsburgh has to offer, PicklesBURGH puts on a pickle spectacular. If you don’t know of the major event, you can still probably guess what it is, a festival where everything and anything is… well, pickle-based.

Recently named America’s #1 Specialty Food Festival by the readers of USA Today, PicklesBURGH has made a name of itself since it started in 2015. It was also featured in the 2019 Pennsylvania State Tourism Guide as the state’s signature event!

The event is even doubling its size this year to accommodate more visitors. This means more room, activities, music, and of course, more pickles.

On July 26th-28th come down to Downtown to find potato and pickle pierogis, dill pickle ice cream, and even a 35-foot inflatable Heinz Pickle balloon. People can also participate in a competitive pickle juice drinking contest. Contestants have the chance to become the Mayor of PicklesBurgh for the year and win $500!

EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta

Ever dream of being a sailor, with the freedom and adventure of the open sea? Well raise your anchors and sails because the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is returning this summer for its 42nd Anniversary Celebration!

The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting water safety and recreational usage of the three rivers in Pittsburgh. At Point State Park, come celebrate the waterfront and our city’s history with the community.

There will be boating, food, music, fireworks, and plenty more family fun. This event is a perfect way to get outdoors, enjoy the nice weather, and appreciate our city’s beautiful landscape and rivers.

EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta has a scoreboard that counts the number of years running, boats that have participated, and even how many hot dogs have been eaten. Make sure to check it out and see the impressive stats for this amazing event!

A Fair in the Park

This untraditional fine craft and contemporary art festival takes art outdoors to enjoy not just the beauty of the talent there, but also the beauty of the summer weather. A Fair in the Park is held in Mellon Park in Shadyside and consists of over 100 regional and national artists.

These incredible artists work within a variety of mediums from wood and metal, to mixed media and two-dimensional art. An estimated 20,000 visitors will be able to explore and relish in the creative masterpieces surrounding them.

The free event will be held between September 6th and 8th, rain or shine! A Fair in the Park is a great opportunity for a relaxing weekend at the end of summer where you can find talented artists from all over.

To make this year’s event even more special, a Fair in the Park will be celebrating its 50th anniversary so don’t miss out on a wonderful, picturesque, weekend.

Other Events

In addition to the events that we’ve already talked about, there are plenty more for you to go out and enjoy. Here are just a few more for example:

  • Kennywood Comic-Con – June 16th: Spend Father’s Day at Kennywood’s comic-con, where you can enjoy rides, food, and comic-book creators, merchandise, and characters!
  • 10th Annual Cap Classic – June 20th-23rd: Take me down to the ballgame… experience one of the largest baseball tournaments in the East Coast.
  • Vintage Market Days of Tri-State Pittsburgh – July 13th: This indoor/outdoor market consists of original clothes, jewelry, antiques, and more!

With everything Pittsburgh has to offer in the summer, everyone can find fun and pleasure, despite what your interests might be. We hope that you are just as excited for all this summer fun as much as we are!

These events and festivals not enough for you? Head to Visit Pittsburgh to see everything happening in the city so you don’t miss out!
