Birgo Realty Spanning the Ages

Post by

There are numerous studies that examine generational differences in the workplace and the challenges and benefits that come with. At Birgo Realty, we have the fortune of working with a team spanning the ages. We practically have a team member from nearly every adult decade.

Here are some ways we work to bring out the various strengths of each generation, and the individuals within them.

Mix Project Styles

Some people work well collaboratively. Others prefer taking a project on alone. It’s important to both the success of the company and our team members that we first understand how we best work, and compromise with others who have different styles. We seek to find the balance between individual work, and lighter group problem-solving. We’ve built into our team’s schedule that we meet weekly to discuss the various business functions (Operations, Management, Leasing, etc.) as well as have one-on-one follow-ups throughout the week, depending on the project.

An Example at Work

For example, Maintenance is a very collaborative area of our company. It requires that we have someone coordinating the jobs and managing our many contractors. It’s important that our maintenance coordinator gets enough alone time to schedule the various service requests and communicate effectively with our contractors. However, it’s also essential to have collaborative time with management team members and leasing agents, so that as a group, we can stay within budget, and on time for different move-ins.

Work With the Individual, Not the Generation

Although there are some general differences between generations in the workplace, whether it’s communication styles, technical skills, adaptability, ultimately you have to connect on an individual with team members, rather than focusing on when someone was born. It matters much less what time you grew up, and more what you bring to the table.
