Renting with Pets - Birgo Realty

Most people go through life with at least one furry family member by their side. Whether you are a dog or a cat person, one thing remains the same, you love them like your own family! Because they are such an important part of your life, knowing what to expect when renting with animals is essential. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you with your next move.

Be Upfront

Always let your landlord know that you have pets. Make sure you sit down and discuss the exact expectations for the pet deposit, rent, and breed restrictions. The last thing you want is to be told to get out or get rid of your pet. Keep in mind that pet deposits can be on the high end, so make sure to have enough saved up along with whatever amount of rent they require upfront.

Do your Research

With more and more people getting pets, there are continuously growing pet-friendly apartment options. While a lot still have weight limits and breed restrictions, there are several that do not. If you aren’t sure of a pet policy call the apartment complex or landlord and they should be more than happy to answer your questions. Depending on how lenient they are, they might even work with you if your pets don’t meet all the requirements.

Look at the Details of Your Renter’s Insurance

As a tenant, it is important that you have renter’s insurance. A bonus would be to make sure that it has pet liability coverage (one that covers as many pet incidents as possible). This will give you peace of mind if anything is damaged by your pet or they happen to bite someone. It also looks great to a landlord because this takes a lot of liability off of their hands. Seeing that you have renter’s insurance with pet liability coverage shows that you are a responsible renter and will make a great impression on the landlords you rent from.
